What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases. If your general dentist believes that you require treatment by a specialist, you will be referred to a periodontist. Periodontists have had extensive advanced training, a minimum of three years in addition to dental school, and hundreds of hours of continuing education courses. As specialists, they devote their time, energy and skills to helping people who need periodontal treatment. Your dentist and periodontist will work together, combining their experience to formulate the best treatment plan for you

Besides fresh breath, a renewed confidence in your smile, and restored oral health, you'll be able to chew your food more easily and enjoy foods you avoided because they were too difficult to eat. Most people know that tooth decay can result in tooth loss if not treated. But for adults, it is periodontal (gum) disease that is the major cause of tooth loss. Years ago, people accepted tooth loss as part of getting older. You don't have to. With help from your general dentist and periodontist, plus your own dedication to good oral hygiene, you can keep your teeth for a lifetime.
Current research has found links between periodontal disease and systemic health problems such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, alzheimer's, premature or low birth-weight babies and osteoporosis. Having healthy gums can also improve your overall health.
